Outstanding lines of enquiry The primary question is what is the exact location of the beach at which Moss party landed? Initially I thought it to be east of Tsoutsouros, at a place called Dermati Beach (as distinct from Dermati Village to the north), and just before the point where the (now) road drops down from a height to sea level. Now, following the chance to see Paddy Leigh Fermor's original map we are not so sure, it may be further west of Tsoutsouros. See Google Earth image of Tsoutsouros and Dermati, unfortunately the western option is in an area not well defined on Google Earth (see via locations link) In answering this question the following may help. Which motor launch landed the Moss party. Initially we thought ML 355 but it now looks like ML 842 with Brian Coleman as skipper. Are there files with logs and operation details? Are there any files available to help tie this down conclusively?( RGJH has suggested some likely ones at the UK National Archives) What was the role of ML 355, Lieut R A Logan RNZNVR Skipper ? (PL helping here) We know from some NA files (details to follow) that ML355 was involved in the planning for the recovery of the abduction party and featured in a plan if the event an earlier one failed. Accurate locations of various overnight stops.
UPDATE FEB 2008. Some answers are now provided by National Archive papers as shown in the links Operation Bricklayer and Operation Moonstruck which can be accessed from the side menu. |
