'In The Footsteps of Heroes' Crete Expedition 2008

The expedition taking place in 2008 will be the second trip to Crete to follow in the footsteps of the British and Cretans heroes who abducted General Kreipe.

In 2005, Chris Paul, Alun Davies, John Ellis Roberts and Richard Cowper, supported on the ground by Tim Todd and Yannis Samatas, followed the route taken by the Kreipe abduction team from the point of abduction between Ano Archanes and Villa Ariadne, to the embarkation beach at Peristeres, Rhodakino.

In 2008, a team, hopefully including all the original team, will seek to follow the earlier part of the route from the point where William Stanley Moss, Manoli Paterakis, George Tyrakis and others landed on 4th April 1944, to the point of abduction. If possible, the team will begin their travels in Cairo and make their way to Crete from Mersa Matruh by boat.

My 'walking' colleagues have all studied the story of Kreipe's abduction in a fair amount of detail, I have been  interested in it since 1990. Though there is a fair amount of debate and argument over some of the detail, we are all agreed that all the participants, Cretans and British, are real heroes. Further, had it not been for the heroes amongst the local Cretan community, such an operation would never had succeeded.

'In the Footsteps of Heroes' should take place between 10th and 25th April 2008.
